New Doors of Opportunity Opening

Exciting things are going on at our new church in Jua Kali. On Sundays we have over 40 kids in attendance and 20 adults! They have also started a nursery school that meets in the church building during the week. There are over 60 boys and girls ranging from 3 years to 9 years in age that attend this school. Coming from poor families they have never had the opportunity to go to school.

I have been given the opportunity to teach Bible to these children every Friday morning. Today was my first day to go. What a blessing it was!!!! The majority of these children are Maasai and it was their first time to have a white person standing before them talking to them. I will try to get pictures next week when I go teach.

I learned today that most understand Swahili; a few only know Maasai and none understand English. =) The Pastor from Naibor came today and translated for me, but starting next week I will be attempting to teach in Swahili. They have a wonderful teacher named Grace who loves each of these children. I am looking forward to working with her to reach these children that God has brought into our lives!

When I was done teaching and leaving the building I saw the funniest thing. One of the little boys was standing on the church porch going to the bathroom. I guess he thought the choo (the hole in the ground style bathroom) was too far for him to make it. Of course I turned my head to give him privacy (not that it did much good since he was on the front porch) and laughed and thought of all the funny things I have experienced here in Kenya. I know the Lord is going to do great things with these children! Keep us in your prayers! =)

This Week

I was excited to start teaching my second piano student on Monday! Tuesday I had some things fixed on my vehicle and got it back on Wednesday. I had a plumber come to do a one day job on Thursday. Well, that one day job became two days and he is still not done. =( On Friday one of our 6th grade boys responded to the invitation at chapel. I had the privilege of seeing him come to Christ!

Only in Kenya would we have a scheduled power out on Sunday. Even with the power being out, we had a great service. One of our Kenyan missionaries that we support in Tanzania was back giving us a report and preaching. I knew him and his family before they went to Tanzania as missionaries. It was good to see him again and pictures of the family! In the next couple of weeks we will being hearing from some of our other Kenyan missionaries that we, the Mt. Kenya Baptist Church supports.

AWANA has started back up again and we had another wonderful afternoon with the kids. The youth pastor and I take turns teaching the lessons during counsel time. Today was my turn and the lesson was on God creating Eve. I took the opportunity to teach the kids about how God made us different from His other creations. He gave us a soul with a mind, will and emotions.

The day ended with a visit to the café where I enjoyed a spiced cappuccino and spent some time studying one of my LBU courses.

September Prayer Letter

The month of July brought many visitors to Nanyuki. We had a young lady come and spend some time with the school kids and orphans. Being a school teacher in the UK, she taught the children many fun games which they enjoyed. She brought with her bottles of washable finger paint. The orphans in particular enjoyed the finger paint. We had to show them a couple of times before they were brave enough to put their fingers into the paint. I believe what they enjoyed most was her British accent and her big smile.

We also had a group from El Paso, Texas come. They went around in some of the village schools presenting a mime and teaching the children a song in sign language. I was with them at one of the schools and had the opportunity to talk with two girls that responded to the invitation. One trusted Christ as her Savior and the other girl came about assurance of salvation. Many decisions were made during the time they were here!

The children have been on a school break for the month of August. That has given me more time to spend with our orphans in Naibor and Timau. The more time I have spent with them, the more they have opened up to me and I am learning about each one of them. One Saturday we enjoyed a great game of baseball at the boys’ orphanage in Timau. Both orphanages are in temporary buildings, one in mud huts and the other in rough wooden buildings. The Lord has blessed with 33 acres of land in an area called Jua Kali (Hot Sun). We have built a church which is not quite finished and have broken ground to build an orphanage for all the orphans to move into!

During the August school break, many of the kids return to their family home places, which are out in the bush. I do not have anything new to tell you concerning Sarah and Issah. School will be starting back in one week. Please continue to pray for their salvation and for Jeff. Thank you for sending and supporting me to reach the children for Christ here in Kenya!

PRAYER REQUEST
- That Sarah, Issah and Jeff might trust Christ as their Savior.

- As I attend classes and bring my Swahili back up to speed.
